Welcome to the Edinburgh Medicine in Literature Reading Group.  We are an interdisciplinary reading group based in Edinburgh that meets regularly to discuss texts of a medical interest.  We interpret ‘texts’, ‘literature’ and ‘medicine’ in the broadest and most inclusive sense possible, so we try to discuss as diverse a range of readings as possible.  All our meetings are open to everyone and anybody is welcome to join the discussion or to suggest readings for future meetings.

In addition, we also work on The Lumen, a journal of the mutual dialogue between medicine, arts and the humanities.  This is a magazine of new writing and artwork that gives voice to the experience of medicine and illness by patients, physicians and medical practitioners.  Its purpose is to foster a sense of community between patients, clinicians, medical students, writers, readers and scholars with an interest in medical narratives.

If you would like to know more about the magazine, or if you would like to contribute to it, please feel free to email the Editorial Board using the contact form on the Lumen page.

Currently, the Reading Group is on hiatus until the start of the next academic year.  While we may not be meeting over the summer, we are still interested in planning future meetings, so we welcome any recommendations for readings, themes or activities for the next year.  Please feel free to get in touch via the contact form in our About page.

If you would like to attend our meetings and if you would like to know how to find copies of the readings, feel free to get in touch with us here.  You can also follow the group’s blog for updates about future meetings, such as the selected readings and themes for discussion.  Please also feel free to make recommendations for future readings.
